Car Lockout Service in Provo, UT

A car lockout in Provo can happen anywhere: a Provo Towne Centre parking lot, a trailhead up Provo Canyon, or your own driveway with the engine still running. We drive to the car and open it with an inflatable wedge and a long-reach tool, or by picking the door lock, methods meant to leave paint, glass, and weatherstripping alone. If a child or pet is inside, call 911 first.

What Car Lockout Service in Provo Includes

AAA Mountain West Group reports lockouts made up 10% of AAA roadside calls in 2024, even though newer cars get locked out less: lockouts were 13% of calls for 2007 models but under 10% for 2017 and newer.

Every car lockout visit includes:

  • Opening the door nearest the keys on cars, pickups, SUVs, and vans.
  • Getting keys out of a locked trunk or cargo area.
  • Checking your ID against the registration or title.
  • Making sure the doors lock and unlock normally before we leave.

If the keys are not in the car at all, the job becomes cutting and programming a replacement key on site. If the fob is in your hand but has stopped working, see key fob programming.

Common Car Lockouts, and the One That Needs 911

Child or pet inside? Call 911 first. Do not wait for a locksmith. NoHeatStroke.org counts 1,070 U.S. children who died of heatstroke in vehicles between 1998 and 2026, an average of 37 a year. Emergency crews can break a window right away, and glass is easy to replace.

  • Keys on the seat or in the ignition. The classic lockout.
  • Engine running, doors locked. Common on cold mornings when a car is left to warm up, and some vehicles relock on their own.
  • Push-button car with the fob inside. Many keyless cars refuse to lock when they sense the fob in the cabin, but a weak fob battery, a fob in a bag the car cannot read, or locking with a second fob or a phone app can still do it.
  • Keys in the trunk. Dropped in with the groceries or the gear, then the lid closed.

How We Open a Locked Car

  1. Call with the details. Year, make, and model, where the keys are, and exactly where you are parked.
  2. Open a small gap. A soft inflatable wedge goes in at the top corner of the door and is pumped just enough to make room for a tool.
  3. Reach the control. A long-reach tool presses the unlock button or pulls the inside handle. Where that is a poor fit, we pick the door lock instead.
  4. Check ownership. Your ID is matched to the registration or title, which is often in the glove box, before the keys go back to you.
  5. Quiet the alarm and test. If the alarm sounds, the fob or the ignition usually silences it. We confirm the locks work before we leave.

Entry Methods by Vehicle and Situation

SituationUsual methodWhat to know
Most cars and hatchbacksWedge and long-reach toolThe tool presses the unlock button or lifts the inside handle
Pickups and full-size SUVsWedge with a longer reach toolTaller cabs take more reach, not more force
Keys in the trunkOpen the cabin, then use the trunk release or a fold-down seatSome cars disable the release when locked, so give us the model up front
Push-button car, fob insideSame cabin entryOnce inside, check whether a weak fob battery caused it
Tight door seals or unusual layoutsPicking the driver's door lockUsed when reach tools are a poor fit

Why not a slim jim? On most modern cars, the inside of the door holds wiring, window parts, and often airbag sensors, and the lock linkage is commonly shielded. Wedge-and-reach and picking both work without going inside the door.

What Affects the Cost of a Car Lockout in Provo

  • Where the keys are. Keys in the cabin are quicker than keys in a trunk with a disabled release.
  • Time of day. Late-night and holiday calls cost more.
  • Location. A downtown lot is a shorter drive than a canyon trailhead.
  • A missing key. If the keys are lost rather than locked inside, a new key is a separate job.

Fixr's 2025 cost guide puts a typical car lockout at $80 to $150 nationally, which is a national average, not our rate. Roadside plans may cover part of it (see the AAA question below). We give you the exact price on the phone and confirm it at the car before we start.

Car Lockouts Around Provo, From Downtown to the Canyons

Provo's weather makes lockouts urgent. NOAA's 1991 to 2020 normals for the Provo BYU station put the average July high at 95.2°F and the average January low at 23.8°F. Summer heat makes a closed car dangerous for anyone left inside, and winter is when cars get left running in driveways to warm up.

We open cars in lots all over the city: Provo Central station, with its 811 park-and-ride spaces, Provo Airport, Provo Towne Centre, and The Shops at Riverwoods. At trailheads, the Y Trail lot fills early and spills onto the road, the Rock Canyon Trail starts from a lot at 2300 North 1450 East, and Bridal Veil Falls is about 2.5 miles up Provo Canyon. Tell us the lot and a landmark so we find the right car.

Why Choose Us

Why Provo Drivers Call Us When the Keys Are Inside

911 first

People and Pets Before Paint

If a child or pet is locked in a car, we will tell you to hang up and call 911 before anything else, because police and fire crews can break a window without waiting on anyone. Nearly a quarter of children who die in hot cars got in on their own, according to NoHeatStroke.org, so keep parked cars locked and fobs out of reach.

91%

Push-Button Cars Are Routine Work

Edmunds data cited by AAA Northeast found that 91% of 2019 model-year vehicles had keyless ignition. That means many lockouts now involve a fob sitting in a cup holder rather than a key in the ignition. Opening the cabin works the same way, and once the door is open we can check whether a weak fob battery is why the car did not sense the fob.

Every car

Ownership Checked Before Keys Change Hands

Opening a car for someone who does not own it would make us part of a theft, so every car lockout includes an ownership check. We match your ID to the registration, title, or rental agreement, usually right after the door opens, since the paperwork is often inside. Driving a borrowed car? Tell us on the call so we can sort out what proof will work before we arrive.

Our Promise

What Every Provo Customer Can Count On

Locksmithing runs on trust. These are the commitments you can hold us to on every call, from a 2 a.m. lockout to a full office rekey.

Your Price Before We Start

We quote on the phone, then confirm the total on site before any work begins. If the job turns out to be different than described, you approve the new number before we continue.

ID Check on Every Lockout

We confirm you live at the address or own the vehicle before we open anything. It takes about a minute, and it is the same check that protects your home from someone else claiming to be you.

Non-Destructive Entry First

We pick, bypass, or decode before we ever consider drilling. If a lock truly has to be drilled, we explain why and get your OK first, and we can replace it on the spot.

A Real Answer at 3 A.M.

Nights, weekends, and holidays use the same phone number. You get a person, a price, and an arrival estimate, not a voicemail box.

FAQ

Car Lockout Service FAQ

Does AAA pay for a locksmith if I am locked out of my car?

It can. AAA Mountain West Group lists lockout reimbursement of $50, $100, or $150 when a locksmith is needed, depending on membership level, and members get four roadside events per year. Check your plan before you call, then keep the receipt to submit for reimbursement.

Will opening my car scratch the paint or break a window?

We do not break windows to open cars. The inflatable wedge is soft and only opens a small gap, and the reach tool goes through that gap to press the unlock button or pull the handle. If your vehicle needs a different approach, we tell you up front.

My car is locked with the engine running. Is that an emergency?

It is urgent but usually not dangerous if no one is inside and the car is outdoors. If it is running in a closed garage, open the garage door to let exhaust out, and call 911 if anyone feels dizzy or sick. Otherwise, the car simply idles until we open it.

Can you make a key if mine are lost, not just locked inside?

Yes, for most makes. If the keys are gone, opening the door does not get you home, so we cut a new blade and program the chip or smart key at the car. That is a separate job from a lockout, and we price it on the call once we know the year, make, and model.
