Break-Ins, Apartments, and Park-and-Rides: Emergencies in Orem
Orem's Department of Public Safety logged 99 burglary offenses in 2024, more than the 78 recorded by Provo police, per the Utah Bureau of Criminal Identification's Crime in Utah 2024 report. In forced-entry burglaries, the Bureau of Justice Statistics found, the door is the most common point of attack. What's left afterward is usually a bent strike plate, a split jamb, or a deadbolt cylinder that was pried or twisted, and the house has to lock again before anyone can sleep.
Rental housing shapes the rest of the picture. More than 13,000 of Orem's occupied homes are rentals, per Census estimates, and Utah Valley University, the state's largest university by enrollment, has no dorms. Student renters are spread through complexes all over the city, and a lockout after the leasing office closes means a locksmith or a long wait for morning.
Car lockouts gather where Orem drivers leave a vehicle for hours:
- The Orem Central FrontRunner station at 900 S 1350 W, with about 498 free park-and-ride spaces
- University Place on University Parkway, with Costco, Trader Joe's, and a Cinemark theater
- Lots around the UVU campus, where a key locked in the car can strand you between classes
