Smart Lock Installation in Provo, UT

Smart lock installation in Provo is half hardware and half setup. The motorized bolt has to slide cleanly into the strike every time, and the app, codes, and auto-lock have to make sense for everyone who uses the door. We fit the lock you picked, pair it, program the codes, and test the backup key before we leave.

  • Keypad, Wi-Fi, or Bluetooth
  • Codes set for everyone
  • Bolt aligned for the motor
  • Backup key tested

What Smart Lock Installation in Provo Includes

Smart lock trouble often starts at the door, not in the app. A full install covers:

  • Strike alignment. A motor cannot push a bolt past a strike that rubs. It stalls, reports a jam, and drains the batteries trying.
  • Handing and calibration, so the lock knows which way the bolt throws on your door.
  • Pairing with the app, your Wi-Fi network, a Bluetooth phone, or a home security hub.
  • Codes and settings. A code for each person, schedules for cleaners or dog walkers if the lock supports them, and an auto-lock delay that suits your household.
  • The backup key. Where the lock has a key cylinder, we can often rekey it to match your other doors.

Is a Smart Lock Right for Your Door?

Parks Associates reported in March 2026 that 11% of U.S. internet households have a smart lock, rising to 25% of homes with a security system, against 3% of homes without. More than half of households planning to move within six months said they plan to buy one. A smart lock fits well when:

  • Keys keep going missing. Kids and roommates each get a code instead.
  • Other people need to get in. Cleaners and contractors get temporary codes you delete later.
  • You manage a rental. Changing a code between tenants takes a minute.

It fits badly on a door that already fights its deadbolt. Get that sorted with lock repair first, or the motor will struggle from day one.

How We Set Up a Smart Lock

  1. Choose the type on the phone. Tell us whether you want remote access and how many people need codes.
  2. Check the door. We confirm the prep and thickness, and adjust hinges or strike until the bolt slides freely by hand.
  3. Mount and calibrate. The keypad and interior unit go on square, and the lock learns its handing.
  4. Pair and program. We connect your phone or hub, replace any default code, and add a code for each person.
  5. Walk the household through it. Everyone tries their code and the backup key with the door shut, and you learn how to change the batteries.

Battery life is the biggest practical difference. Schlage says its Encode Wi-Fi deadbolt gets up to six months from four AA batteries with typical use. Yale says the four AAs in its standalone Assure Lock SL, a keypad model with no Wi-Fi, last an average of 18 months. Wi-Fi radios draw more power, so expect more battery changes with a Wi-Fi lock. Brands named are examples from published spec sheets, not recommendations.

Keep a way in when the batteries die

Many smart deadbolts keep a standard key cylinder, which can often be rekeyed to your house key. Some keyless models skip the cylinder and take emergency power from outside instead: Yale lists a 9-volt battery jump for one-time entry on the Assure Lock SL. Know which kind you have, and keep the key somewhere other than inside the house.

Smart Lock Installation Cost Factors

What changes the price:

  • The lock. Wi-Fi models usually cost more than keypad-only or Bluetooth ones, and the lock is often the largest part of the bill.
  • Door work. Moving a strike, tightening hinges, or enlarging a bore adds time.
  • Setup. Pairing one phone is quick; a hub, a bridge, and scheduled codes take longer.
  • Matching keys. Rekeying the backup cylinder to your house key is an added step.
  • Number of doors. Front door and garage entry in one trip cost less than two visits.

We give you the exact price on the phone once we know the lock and the door, and confirm it on site before we start.

Smart Locks Through a Provo Winter

NOAA's 1991 to 2020 normals put the average January low at the Provo BYU station at 23.8°F. Check the operating range of any lock you consider: Yale, for example, rates the Assure Lock SL from -22°F to 140°F, which covers a typical Provo winter night with room to spare. Provo's record low of -30°F is colder than that, so treat the rating as a real limit.

On most smart deadbolts the batteries sit in the interior unit, at room temperature. The keypad and bolt take the cold, and a frame that shifts in winter makes the motor work harder, so have a dragging bolt adjusted before it jams.

Provo's median age is 23.6, per the American Community Survey, and in shared houses near the BYU campus a code per roommate beats a drawer of copied keys.

Why Choose Us

Why Provo Households Have Us Install Smart Locks

-22°F

Spec Sheets Checked for Utah Cold

Not every smart lock is built for a Utah January. Before we install, we look at the maker's published operating range, battery type, and backup entry method, and tell you how they fit your door. A lock rated down to -22°F handles a typical Provo winter night. A lock with no published range gets a frank conversation before it goes on.

Code and Backup Both Tested

A smart lock that only works while the batteries are fresh is half a lock. Before we leave, every code is tried on the closed door, the auto-lock delay is set, and the backup key or emergency power method is tested and explained. If the backup cylinder can be rekeyed to your house key, we do that in the same visit.

24/7

Dead Battery Lockouts, Any Hour

Batteries die at the worst time, and a keyless lock with no working backup can leave you on the porch. We answer around the clock, every day of the year, and come out to get you in, starting with non-destructive methods. Once you are inside, we can replace the batteries and fix the strike if a jam caused the drain.

FAQ

Smart Lock Installation FAQ

Do I need Wi-Fi for a smart lock?

No. Keypad-only and Bluetooth locks work without any internet connection. Wi-Fi, or a hub on your security system, is needed only if you want to lock and unlock from away or get phone alerts. If the internet goes down, a Wi-Fi lock still opens with its code or key.

Can a smart lock replace my existing deadbolt?

Usually. Most smart deadbolts fit the standard holes a regular deadbolt uses, so the swap is direct. Some retrofit models replace only the interior thumbturn side and keep your existing exterior cylinder and key. We check thickness and backset first, then adjust the strike for the motorized bolt.

Are smart locks as secure as regular deadbolts?

The bolt and housing matter more than the electronics, so check the BHMA rating. Schlage lists its Encode deadbolt at A156.40 Grade AAA, and Yale lists the Assure Lock SL at A156.36 Grade 2. Code habits matter too: avoid birthdays and repeated digits, delete unused codes, and keep the master code private.

Can you rekey the key cylinder on a smart lock?

Often, yes. Many smart deadbolts use a standard cylinder for the backup key, and those can be rekeyed to match the rest of your house. Some use proprietary cylinders that can only be swapped, not rekeyed. Tell us the brand and model when you call and we will tell you which kind you have.
