Highland Households and the Keys They Hand Out
Highland's 2026 General Plan calls the city "a family-oriented bedroom community defined by large lots, single-family homes, and open spaces." The numbers back that up. Census estimates show 91.7% of homes are owner-occupied, 88.4% are detached houses, and the median home value is $928,300. Commercial land covers less than 1% of the city, so nearly every rekey here is a house, and usually one with plenty of doors.
Busy families collect keys. A teenager's friend borrows one, a sitter keeps one, a neighbor holds a spare for vacations, and a landscaper gets one for the season. After a few years, few owners can say where every copy went. Rekeying resets the count to the keys you hand out on purpose. In a household this size, the harder question is often not who holds a key today but who could copy one tomorrow.
Highland's housing spans several eras on the Highland Bench: about 22% built before 1991, 46% from 1991 to 2008, and 32% from 2008 to 2023, per the General Plan. Large-lot subdivisions such as Foxwood Estates, Sloan Estates, and Sunrise Farms are under construction or approved, so first owners there have builder keys to retire as well.
