Why a Lost Key Hits Harder in Vineyard
Vineyard's parking rules are stricter than most. The city prohibits street parking during snowfall and says illegally parked vehicles may be towed or booted at the owner's expense. In the Providence and Springs neighborhoods, parking on the street also takes a permit, with up to three per household. A car stuck at the curb with no key when snow starts is a problem with a deadline.
Vineyard skews young, and its drivers share rides more than most. The median age is 25.2, 55.3% of homes are rented, only a third are detached houses, and nearly all were built in 2010 or later. 13.1% of workers carpool, compared with 10.9% in neighboring Orem. Every time a car passes between roommates or partners, its key passes too, and every handoff is a chance for it to go missing.
Most late-model cars start with a fob, not a turn of a key. Edmunds data show keyless ignition on 91% of 2019 model-year vehicles. A push-to-start fob has to be paired with the car's computer, which is work we do at the vehicle, whether it sits in a building's lot, on a townhome street, or at the Vineyard FrontRunner station's 108-space park-and-ride.
