Key Duplication in Provo, UT

Key duplication in Provo sounds simple until a copy sticks in the lock or a kiosk refuses to cut it. We copy house, office, padlock, mailbox, and car keys, and when an original is worn, we cut by code to factory depths instead of copying the wear into every new key. Restricted and high-security keys are copied only with authorization from whoever controls the key system.

Key Duplication in Provo: What We Copy

  • House and apartment keys. Deadbolt, knob, and handleset keys for common residential brands like Kwikset and Schlage.
  • Office keys. Commercial cylinder, interchangeable core, and master-keyed system keys, with approval where the system requires it.
  • Padlock keys. Many padlocks carry a key code stamped on the key or the lock body, so a missing key can often be cut from the code.
  • Mailbox keys. Copies of your own compartment key for a cluster box, an apartment mailbox bank, or a wall-mount box. If every mailbox key is gone, replacing the mailbox lock is the fix.
  • Car keys. Plain metal keys copy like any other key. Chip keys and fobs also need the new key cloned or programmed, which falls under car key replacement.

Why Some Keys Cannot Be Copied at a Kiosk

Self-serve kiosks and hardware counters stock blanks for the most common keyways. They turn keys away for several reasons, and only some are real barriers.

  • Restricted keyways. The blank's profile is controlled by the manufacturer and sold only through authorized dealers, so ordinary stores cannot get it.
  • Patented high-security keys. Systems such as Medeco, Mul-T-Lock, and Schlage Primus control their keys through patents and registered owners. Blanks go only to dealers authorized for that system, and copies need the registered owner's approval, often a signed card or ID on file. See high-security locks.
  • Do Not Duplicate stamps. On an ordinary keyway, the stamp is a request, not a legal barrier by itself, and anyone with the right blank can cut a copy. Real key control takes a restricted system.
  • Worn or uncommon keys. Older, foreign, or badly worn keys a kiosk cannot read or has no blank for.

How We Cut an Accurate Copy

  1. Tell us what is on the ring. House, office, padlock, mailbox, or car, how many copies of each, and any brand or number stamped on the keys.
  2. Confirm authorization. For restricted or high-security keys, the registered key holder or property manager approves the copy.
  3. Decode the original. We match the keyway and measure the depth of each cut with a gauge, which shows whether the original is worn.
  4. Cut by code or by tracing. Worn originals are cut to factory depths by code. Crisp originals on common keys can be traced.
  5. Deburr and test. Sharp edges come off so the key does not drag on the pins, and each copy is tried in its lock.

Cut by Code vs. Traced Copies

There are a few ways to make a copy, and they do not produce the same key.

MethodHow it worksBest forLimits
TracingA machine follows the original's cuts onto a blankClean, lightly worn originalsCopies every bit of wear; copies of copies drift further
Code cuttingCuts made to the maker's specified depths from a key code or decoded originalWorn originals, lost keys with a known codeNeeds a code or a readable original
KioskThe key is scanned and cut automaticallyA quick copy of a common house keyLimited blanks; no restricted or high-security keys
Authorized restricted cutA controlled blank cut through the system's authorized channelRestricted and patented keysRequires the key holder's approval

A copy that only works when you jiggle it was probably traced from a worn or already-copied key, and a code-cut key usually fixes it. If the real problem is that too many copies are already out there, more copies will not help: rekeying the lock makes every old key useless.

What Affects the Cost of Key Duplication

  • Key type. Standard house keys cost the least. Restricted, high-security, and laser-cut keys cost more.
  • Code cutting. Decoding and cutting to factory depths takes longer than tracing.
  • Quantity. Several copies cut in one visit spread the trip across every key.
  • The visit. We are mobile, so a trip to your home or office is part of the price.

Fixr's 2025 cost guide puts duplicate key cutting at $10 to $50 nationally. Because we come to you, one ordinary house key copy is usually cheaper at a hardware counter. We make the most sense for a ring of keys at once, keys a kiosk will not cut, worn originals, and copies added to another job. We give you the exact price on the phone before we come out.

Key Copies for Older Provo Homes, Rentals, and Offices

Census American Community Survey data shows 18.7% of Provo's housing units were built before 1960, including about 7.1% built before 1940. Locks that old can take keys a kiosk has no blank for, and the keys still on the ring can be worn from decades of use. Decoding those keys and cutting to code gives you a copy that works the way the original did when it was new.

If you rent, check your lease before copying a key. It may say keys come only from the landlord, and a key on a restricted system needs the manager's approval. Office keys downtown and in Provo's business parks follow the same logic: whoever runs the key system approves the copies.

Why Choose Us

Why Provo Calls Us for Key Duplication

Factory depth

Copies Cut to the Code, Not the Wear

Every time a key is traced from a worn original, the copy picks up that wear, and copies of copies get worse. When an original is worn, we decode its cuts and cut new keys to the manufacturer's depths instead. The copy often works better than the key you handed us, and a key that fits properly is easier on the pins in your lock.

Owner OK

Restricted Keys Copied Only With Authorization

Restricted and high-security keys exist so the owner decides who holds a copy, and we respect that. Before we cut or order one, we confirm authorization from the registered key holder, property manager, or business owner. A Do Not Duplicate stamp on an ordinary key gets a question from us about who approved the copy, because key control only works when the person cutting keys takes it seriously.

1 visit

Every Key on the Ring, Cut Where You Are

A kiosk can copy a common house key, but it will not help with the padlock, the office key, the mailbox key, and the car key on the same ring. We come to your home or business in Provo and cut the whole set in one visit, trying the house copies in your own locks before we leave. That matters most to landlords and offices that need many keys at once.

Our Promise

What Every Provo Customer Can Count On

Locksmithing runs on trust. These are the commitments you can hold us to on every call, from a 2 a.m. lockout to a full office rekey.

Your Price Before We Start

We quote on the phone, then confirm the total on site before any work begins. If the job turns out to be different than described, you approve the new number before we continue.

ID Check on Every Lockout

We confirm you live at the address or own the vehicle before we open anything. It takes about a minute, and it is the same check that protects your home from someone else claiming to be you.

Non-Destructive Entry First

We pick, bypass, or decode before we ever consider drilling. If a lock truly has to be drilled, we explain why and get your OK first, and we can replace it on the spot.

A Real Answer at 3 A.M.

Nights, weekends, and holidays use the same phone number. You get a person, a price, and an arrival estimate, not a voicemail box.

FAQ

Key Duplication FAQ

Is it illegal to copy a key stamped Do Not Duplicate?

A Do Not Duplicate stamp on a standard key is not a legal barrier by itself. It is a request from whoever issued the key, and many locksmiths, including us, ask who authorized the copy. Restricted and patented keys are different: the blanks are controlled, and copies require the key holder's authorization.

Why does my copied key stick in the lock?

Most often it was traced from a worn key or from a copy of a copy, so each cut is slightly off. Burrs left from cutting can also catch on the pins. A key cut by code to factory depths and properly deburred usually fixes it.

Can you copy my mailbox key?

Yes, for your own compartment key, as long as it is a key you are entitled to hold. We never copy Postal Service keys, such as parcel locker keys or the carrier's key for a cluster box. If you have lost every key to your mailbox, the lock usually has to be replaced rather than copied.

Can you copy a car key with a chip in it?

The metal blade copies like any key, but a chip key also needs its transponder cloned or the new key programmed to the car, or it will open the doors without starting the engine. We handle both for most makes and models.
